The Effects of Assets on the Subjective Health of the Elderly: Focusing on the Mediating Effects of Depression

This study aims to examine whether assets positively influence subjective health of the elderly and whether the relationship between assets and subjective health is mediated by depression. In addition, this study intends to compare asset effects and income effects on depression and subjective health. The study sample is the elderly aged 65 or older from the Korean Retirement and Income Study (2015). To detect the mediation effect of depression, this study employs path analysis and bootstrapping. Key research findings are as follows: First, assets have statistically significant impacts on depression as well as subjective health. Second, the relationships between assets and the subjective health was mediated by depression. Findings of this study suggest several implications. First, asset building should be included as one of crucial contents for life planning program. Second, public and private pension should be implemented to achieve universality and adequacy of pension programs. Last, asset building programs targeting older adults can be developed to give older adults chances of long-term development and stability of economic status.
